Broken Bracket on Your Braces This Halloween? Here’s What to Do

Halloween should be about costumes, friends, and maybe a little candy – not a broken bracket ruining your night.

At Palm Beach Orthodontics, we know Halloween can be one of the trickiest times of year for patients wearing braces. Sticky, chewy, and extra-hard treats can put brackets and wires to the test. The good news? A little planning can help keep your braces – and your smile – safe.

Not all candy is equally risky when you have braces. The biggest troublemakers are usually hard, sticky, chewy, or crunchy treats.

Think caramel, taffy, gummies, jawbreakers, hard candies, popcorn, and candies with very hard nuts. These can pull on brackets, bend wires, or become lodged around your appliances.

A broken bracket isn’t necessarily a major emergency, but it can interfere with treatment if it isn’t addressed appropriately.

Halloween Candy Yes, You Can Still Have Halloween Candy!

Braces don’t mean Halloween is canceled.

Softer treats are generally the better choice. Plain chocolate that melts easily, peanut butter cups, soft baked treats, and other foods that don’t require aggressive biting or chewing are typically much kinder to braces.

One important rule: don’t bite directly into hard foods or candy with your front teeth.

And remember, Halloween sugar loves hiding around brackets. Brush carefully around every bracket and along the gumline, and don’t skip flossing.

First, don’t panic.

If the bracket is still attached to the wire and isn’t bothering you, orthodontic wax may help keep it comfortable until our team can evaluate it. If a wire is irritating your cheek or gums, wax can also provide temporary relief.

Don’t try to pull brackets or wires off yourself.

Contact Palm Beach Orthodontics so our team can determine whether you need to come in or whether the issue can safely wait until your next appointment.

Severe pain, significant swelling, trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing requires more urgent medical or dental attention.

Witch icon A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

After more than 20 years of treating orthodontic patients, I’ve learned that most Halloween bracket mishaps are preventable.

Enjoy the holiday. Choose your treats wisely. Keep up with your brushing. And if something doesn’t feel right, ask us rather than trying to fix it yourself.

At Palm Beach Orthodontics, you’ll see an orthodontist at every appointment. Whether you’re in braces or clear aligners, your treatment is personally monitored with your bite, smile, and long-term stability in mind.

Have fun, be safe, and keep those brackets where they belong.

Happy Halloween from Dr. Angela and the Palm Beach Orthodontics team!
