Tips for Using Retainers

  • Wear your retainer at all times, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it back in its case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
  • Clean the retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing retainers removes the plaque, and eliminates odors. Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners can be used but do not take the place of brushing.
  • When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in its case. Pets love to chew on them!
  • Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to it faster.
  • Retainers are breakable, so treat yours with care. If your retainer gets lost or broken, call us immediately.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or you believe it needs adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust it yourself.
  • Always bring your retainer to your appointments.
  • Retainer replacements are expensive, but with proper care they will last for years!
  • Remove your retainer when you go swimming.
  • Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.

FAQs

How do I use a retainer correctly?

You’ll want to wear your retainer except when eating (and use the case to store your retainer correctly). Clean it regularly, practice speaking to get used to it much faster, and keep it away from hot water. This page has some valuable information on caring for your retainer, and Dr. Angela can offer proper usage advice during appointments.

How often should I wear my retainer?

You should wear your retainer at all times, until or unless Dr. Angela has provided you with alternative instructions. When eating, remove the retainer and place it in its case to avoid damage. The longer you wear the retainer, the closer you’ll get to your desired results.

Will the retainer affect my speech?

You may find that speaking feels different at first, but the best way through this stage is to keep talking. Sing, read out loud, and speak to your loved ones and friends. Soon enough, you’ll get over this initial stage and it’ll feel normal.

Should I wear my retainer if my gums are swollen?

If your gums are swollen, seek advice from Dr. Angela and the Palm Beach Orthodontics team. Depending on the swelling, we might recommend a day or two away from the retainer to allow the swelling to go down. But you should never stop wearing your retainer long-term without professional advice.

How long will my retainer last?

With the right maintenance and care, your retainer can last for many years. Care instructions include taking it out while swimming and eating, using the case, and cleaning it regularly. Our friendly team is always here if you have any maintenance questions.
